enDie in Hibiskusblüten enthaltenen Wirkstoffe sind in erster Linie organische Säuren: Hibiskus, Zitrone, Weinstein, Apfel, Oxalsäure und Ascorbinsäure (Vitamin C). Hibiskusblüten enthalten dreimal mehr Vitamin C als schwarze Johannisbeeren und neunmal mehr als Zitronen. Die Farbe der Kelche - von leuchtend rot bis dunkelviolett - wird durch das Vorhandensein von Antozyaninen bestimmt, deren Gehalt mit der Frucht von Holunderbeeren und Heidelbeeren vergleichbar ist. Weitere biologisch aktive Verbindungen, die in dieser Pflanze vorkommen, sind Schlamm, Pektin, Polyphenole und Karotine.
